Advancements in science and practice: RE&CBT treatment strategies for anxiety disorders – Michael Hickey, Ph.D.
There are several disorders that are included in the classification of anxiety disorders (e.g., Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, and specific phobias), but this workshop will primarily focus on the clinical similarities among these disorders and how Rational Emotive & Cognitive Behavior Therapy (RE&CBT) theoretical concepts, interventions, and recent research findings can be applied across the treatment of the various anxiety disorders.
During this workshop, RE&CBT theory, research, and interventions for anxiety will be reviewed and participants will learn how to implement innovative cognitive and behavioral strategies based on the most recent research findings. In addition, participants will learn how to conduct a proper functional assessment, collaborate with clients in constructing relevant fear hierarchies, implement appropriate exposure and response prevention (ERP) exercises, and identify and gradually eliminate safety behaviors. Participants will also learn appropriate ways to utilize psychoeducation, motivational enhancement, and cognitive restructuring to assist clients prior to, during, and after ERP in order to maximize favorable treatment outcomes.
